LIVING IN VANCOUVER
Next Training Session Starts April 30th 2018
Vancouver is the North American capital for visual effects and boasts the largest animation studio on the continent. It’s a great city in which to study, with mild (but wet) winters, warm summers and a spectacular landscape. CG Masters is located in New Westminster, BC, about 30 minutes from Downtown Vancouver. There are lots of things to do and places to explore while going to school. For more information about New Westminster, check out Tourism New Westminster’s website.
International students coming to CG Masters often ask about the cost of living. The following numbers are estimates only.
Depending on whether you choose a home-stay with a family, a shared apartment or a private apartment, your rent can range from $500 to $1500 per month. Students can usually find more affordable accommodation outside of Vancouver and our Admin Team is happy to assist students in looking for the right place to live. If you are looking at online ads on sites such as Craigslist, be sure to look for accommodation close to a Skytrain station. CG Masters is located within a station and is very accessible to public transit.
Depending on whether you prepare your own food or plan on eating out often, your food bill will probably range from $200 to $500 per month. CG Masters has a kitchen for student use. This is handy for cooking a quick meal, reheating food from home or enjoying take-out from one of the many restaurants located nearby.
The school is conveniently located within the Shops at New West Station with access directly on the Skytrain platform and bus hub. For information about monthly passes, go to Translink’s website for up to date information. Most students get a monthly Compass Card. The cost of the Compass Card can range from $93/month (1 Zone) to $172/month (3 Zone). When looking for accommodation, it is good to consider the cost of the pass as well.
For entertainment, we recommend you budget $100 – $200 per month. There is a Landmark Cinema located in the shopping complex as well.
Using these numbers, your total budget for one year can range from $10,800 to $27,600.Most people say to budget an average of $1,000 to $1,400 per month for living expenses. With a tuition of $34,500 and factoring in early sign-up discounts, your total budget for school education and accommodation can range from roughly $40,000 – $65,000. In order to acquire a student visa, candidates will need to show Immigration Canada that they have these funds available before they will be permitted to enter the country.
